This long awaited AR wearable technology device can now be preordered by the first who will use it.
Skully has now announced that it is taking preorders for its motorcycle helmet called the AR-1, which brings augmented reality into a heads up display so that the wearer will be able to take advantage of driving directions, speed data, incoming calls from a smartphone, and many other features.
The information from these features is displayed in the helmet, appearing to be about 10 feet ahead.
The types of alerts that are displayed on this augmented reality helmet have been compared to the kinds that could be received by wearers of Google Glass, for instance. The beta version of the AR-1 was first released in 2013, and since that time, many technology enthusiasts and motorcycle riders have been anxiously awaiting the official release of this wearable tech. Now, through Indiegogo, pre-orders are being taken by Skully, for an introductory price of $1,399. While that may seem like a hefty price tag, it is a discount compared to the $1,499 for which it will retail, once it hits the shelves. Of course, those are the U.S. prices. International bikers will see $1,599 on their receipts.
Skully believes that it will begin shipping its AR-1 augmented reality motorcycle helmets in May 2015.
The prices stated above are for the regular edition of the AR-1. However, for $1,999, buyers are able to obtain a signature edition of the helmet, which will be signed by Marcus Weller, the CEO of Skully, and that will be hand numbered. Those who are truly dedicated to the wearable technology and who have money burning a hole in their pockets could also drop $25,000 if they want to receive one of the prototype helmets that will begin shipping in February 2015.
By the time of the writing of this article, there had already been over $900,000 in preorders that had been made. This is clearly much higher than its initial goal, which had been for $250,000 in preorders. There remains some time in which to make preorders, as the campaign will continue to run until September 9,2014. These augmented reality helmets will come in either gloss white or matte black.
